How close was it? By the end of August, our aircraft and personnel losses were overtaking the output of our factories and pilot training schools. As a precursor to Operation Sealion, the German invasion of Britain, the Battle of Britain was a lot closer than bears contemplation.

Federal regulators have given the green light for licensing to proceed for a plant to make nuclear reactor fuel from plutonium waste at the old nuclear bomb plant near Aiken. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission said in a report that plans for the mixed oxide fuel facility at the Savannah River Site seem safe and would not pose undue risks to workers or the public. Construction on the facility to convert weapons-grade plutonium into nuclear reactor fuel called MOX began in 2007. Officials say the facility is on schedule and should be up and running in 2016.

The former Studebaker’s nightclub in Myrtle Beach will soon be a Dollar General store, city and business officials said. Studebaker’s, a Myrtle Beach icon and home to most of the annual National Shag Dance Championships, closed in January because of the poor economy and reduced attendance at the May bike rallies, owner Don Cauthen has said.

Toyota recalled 1.13 million Corolla sedans and Matrix hatchbacks Thursday because their engines may stall, the latest in a string of quality problems at the Japanese automaker. The recall covers vehicles from the 2005-2008 model years sold in North America. Three accidents and one minor injury have been reported, though Toyota said a link to the engine issue has not been confirmed. Toyota said it will replace the engine control modules on the recalled vehicles at no charge. Toyota Motor Corp. has recalled more than 10 million vehicles worldwide over the past year.

Federal officials have hit American Airlines with a record penalty of $24.2 million over maintenance lapses that caused thousands of canceled flights in 2008. The Federal Aviation Administration said Thursday that American failed to take steps to prevent chafing of electrical wires in the wheel wells of its McDonnell Douglas MD-80-series jets. The FAA says the wiring could have led to fires and fuel-tank explosions. American vowed to challenge the proposed penalty.

Still, we all know there are plenty of people that drive such trucks almost purely for pleasure. Just go to any country or metal concert at Jiffy Lube Live and you’ll see those Rams — along with Ford F-150s and other big rigs just this side of commercial vehicles lined up like soldiers guarding the perimeter.

Suffice to say that I didn’t do any heavy-duty hauling or off-road excursions when I test-drove this monster truck that boasts a 26-gallon fuel tank, heavy-duty engine cooling and electronic stability control. Honda has taken a fresh approach to hybrids with its CR-Z, the car it is billing as the world?s first hybrid sports coupe and which is now on sale in South Africa. Instead of reinventing the car in hybrid form, as Toyota have done with the Prius, Honda created a car that is sporty, fun and enhanced by hybrid technology.

The key to the CR-Z is its parallel hybrid drivetrain. In simple terms, this consists of a doughnut-shape electric motor about 50mm wide sandwiched between a 1.5-litre motor and a six-speed manual transmission.

Looking into the engine bay of one of the CR-Zs on display at Honda?s official Cape Town launch on Tuesday, I could see that the hybrid makeup of this car is inconspicuous. A barely-visible three-phase power cable connector is the only item that suggests there's more to the drive train than would at first appear.

The electric motor is connected to a 100.8-volt nickel metal hydride battery ? weighing in at roughly 40 kilograms - that sits in the rear space normally occupied by the spare wheel on most cars. A space-saver spare wheel is located just above the battery and the fuel tank has been shifted to below the back row of seats.

The National Highway Traffic Safety administration has opened a preliminary investigation of about 3 million 1993-2004 Jeep Grand Cherokees after a petition from safety advocacy group Center for Auto Safety.

The CAS alleges in its petition that the placement of the Jeep's plastic gas tank behind the rear axle and below the rear bumper make it a fire risk in a rear-end or rollover crash. NHTSA has 12 reports of post-crash gas tank leaks, 10 involving fires with nine injuries and one death.

In a letter dated October 2, 2009, the Center for Auto Safety (CAS) petitioned NHTSA to open a defect investigation and recall model year 1993-2004 Jeep Grand Cherokees. CAS alleged that the subject vehicles have defective fuel tank storage systems that present a fire hazard in crashes.

CAS alleged that the plastic fuel tank's placement behind the rear axle and below the rear bumper, and the lack of adequate shielding, make it more vulnerable to rupture or leakage from a rear-impact by another vehicle (including damage from other components located on the Grand Cherokee), or in the case of rollover crashes, from other external objects. CAS also alleged that the fuel filler neck tears off in crashes. In its petition, CAS cites data from NHTSA's Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) showing 172 fatal fire crashes with 254 fatalities involving the subject vehicles from calendar years 1992 through 2008. CAS stated that there have been at least 44 crashes with 64 total fatalities (subject and non-subject vehicles) where fire was entered as the Most Harmful Event (MHE) in the FARS database.
