One of the most awaitedfigures for the industry these days are from China and India. India, in themonth of April posted its best car sales figures in the decade at 39.5%. Thegrowth is expected to sustain and easy availability of finance would play amajor role as it has until now. Majority of the growth came from the small-carsegment which continued to account for more than 70% of the total sales. MarutiSuzuki’s domestic sales grew by 22.12% to 68,668 units according to SIAM.Hyundai Motors and Tata Motors also witnessed a healthy growth of 28.15% and76.41% to 28,501 and 19,762 units respectively. Despite the positive figures theindustry needs to overcome some major challenges in the form of increasing rawmaterial costs which are eating into the margins of automakers and high interestrates which could prove to be a dampener for consumer sentiment in the long-run.
China, the world’slargest automotive market posted a 33.2% increase in car sales in April 2010with the trend showing a decline from the 71.78% growth in the first quarter ofthis year. This however, should not raise any negative speculations since thedecline can be attributed to China’s market stabilizing from a period ofhigh-growth. Sales in China were reported at 15,50,000 units last monthaccording to The China Association of Auto Manufacturers (CAAM). The associationforecasts annual sales for this year at 15 million (1,50,00,000), roughly a 10%growth over last year. Contrary to Indian market vehicles with engine equal toor smaller than 1.6 litres witnessed a 2% decline from last year’s averagein March. The segment now accounts for 67% of total car sales. SAIC Motors,China’s largest automaker sold 3,03,800 units inApril.
Several new launches in the compact car category, easier availability of finance and the low base effect of last year helped the Indian automobile industry to continue its growth momentum of 2009 into April 2010 as well, with passenger car sales registering their highest growth in a decade.
According to the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (Siam), total passenger car sales in the country surged 39.5 per cent last month at 1,43,976 units, as against 1,03,227 units during the same month last year. This is the highest growth in car sales in April in the last 11 years. Car sales had grown 50.3 per cent in 1999.
“Low base of last year has resulted in surge in passenger car sales in April and, while this will continue to play a prominent role even in the next two months, there could be a little bit of tempering in the second quarter, when higher sales of last year impact growth rates,” said Vaishali Jajoo, senior auto analyst, Angel Broking.

For the year 2010-11, Bajaj is aiming at total sales of40,00,000 units of which motorcycles are expected to account for 36,00,000units. Most of the sales for the motorcycle segment would come from the Discoverand Pulsar range.
A 21-year-old airman was allegedly robbed of his cash and ATM card by four men posing as Crime Branch officers, police said.
The accused also conned the airman, identified as Bihari Singh, into revealing the PIN number of his ATM card.
