In the run-up to the birthday of Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray, his party, which is against fashion shows, held one on Saturday. It was a show with a difference. On the large makeshift ramp at a stadium in Bhavani Peth were autorickshaws, all decked up, their proud owners vying for a prize.
There was a variety to choose from, black, white, coffee brown, some with LCD monitors, one even had an acquarium. Many sported modern gadgets and some had monograms in front resembling that of leading car manufacturers. One boasted an air-conditioner, changing the whole perspective of an autorickshaw. Colourful hoods, luxury seats, a special first-aid box, a separate stand for newspapers and different chassis designs made it all tough to declare the winners from over 35 autorickshaws.
?There were 14 judges and it was difficult selecting the winners. The first prize was Rs 25,000 and a citation, the second and third were Rs 15,000 and Rs 10,000 respectively. There were private autos and ordinary rickshawallahs,? said Khalid Dilliwala, president of the MNS transport wing.
