NEW DELHI: Travel by auto-rickshaws and taxis in the Capital will become 35 per cent more expensive from Wednesday with the Delhi Government announcing a fare hike on Tuesday in the wake of the recent increase in CNG prices.
Announcing this, Delhi Transport Minister Arvinder Singh Lovely said the decision had been taken in view of the increase in CNG prices as also the rise in the maintenance costs of these vehicles.
He said the Government has also made it mandatory now for auto-rickshaws to install the Global Positioning System (GPS) within six months. Besides, a call centre facility will be created to provide the services of auto-rickshaws over telephone. He also announced that the Government had decided to soon launch a new non-AC taxi service in which the fare would be a flat Rs.10 per km. This service would be on the lines of the existing air-conditioned radio taxi service.
Mumbai: Mumbai commuters found themselves all dressed up for work with nowhere to go on Tuesday morning. Their nightmare was duplicated during the evening rush hour.
More than 80,000 taxis and close to one lakh autos were not available to the city. Drivers announced a strike at midnight on Monday, demanding that fares be revised, because they're paying more now for CNG.
In the afternoon, taxi and auto union leaders met with Transport Minister Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil, and were told their demands would be considered over the next week.
