By end-September this year, the company hopes to have in place capacity of 3.5 lakh bikes across its plants in Chakan, Waluj and Pantnagar (with some numbers from the Chinese operations of the Boxer meant largely for the African market).
While the 100cc option is expected to account for 1.1 lakh units in October, the Discover 150 will take up the balance 50,000 units.
A formal joint venture (JV) between leading homegrown two-wheeler maker Bajaj Auto with Renault-Nissan to manufacture an ultra low-cost (ULC) car may not take place. Bajaj Auto on Tuesday stated that the car could be developed by merely entering into an agreement with the French-Japanese car maker. The agreement, Bajaj Auto said, did not necessarily have to be a JV.
?We can fulfill our mutual objective through a simple original equipment manufacturer (OEM) arrangement, and without the need to necessarily create a new corporate entity in the form of a JV,? the statement said. Analysts think Bajaj is now likely to be a mere contract manufacturer as it would own no stake in the absence of a formal JV.
Bajaj and Renault-Nissan had announced in May last year a JV to develop, produce and market the ULC. Bajaj was to have a 50 per cent stake in the JV entity, with Renault and Nissan holding 25 per cent each. During his visit to India in November last year, Renault-Nissan president and CEO Carlos Ghosn had said that his company had reached an oral understanding with Bajaj under which the two-wheeler company was going to design, develop and manufacture the car. Renault-Nissan, Ghosn said, would be responsible for branding and marketing of the product. In today?s statement Bajaj Auto said that the partnership was intact, and the project was on schedule. The ULC is expected to give competition to the world?s cheapest car, the Tata Nano. In May, Rajiv Bajaj had played down the price factor and said that the company would look to improve efficiency by increasing the mileage.

Bangalore, July 6 Toyota-Kirloskar Auto Parts (TKAP) will manufacture engine and transmission parts for Toyota's new car Etios, which is expected to hit the roads early next year.

BEIJING, July 5 (Xinhua) -- China's automobile sales surged 30.45 percent year on year to 7.18 million units in the first half of the year, keeping the country the world's largest auto market, a Chinese research organization said in a report released Monday.
On a month-on-month basis, though, auto sales dropped 5.25 percent in June, even as on a year-on-year basis June auto sales advanced 13.97 percent, according to statistics disclosed by the China Automotive Technology & Research Center (CATRC).

BY NORIHIKO SHIROUZU BEIJING—Auto sales in China continued to rise in June, though at a slower pace than in previous months, which some analysts said could mean a cooling market later this year.
Sales by Toyota Motor Corp., which has been hurt by quality troubles this year, rose a relatively modest 7.7% in June from a year earlier to 60,900 vehicles, a company spokesman in Beijing said Monday. The growth rate for the month was much slower than earlier this year, as the company's first-half sales totaled 362,300 vehicles, up 27% from a year earlier.
