“Currently, transportation of automobiles by railways is 15-20 per cent higher than the cost incurred for carriage via road. There is a need for a minimum 20 per cent discount on container haulage and over 35 per cent discount on current new modified goods (NMG) freight rates to bring it at par with transportation by roads,” said Siam Senior Director Sugato Sen.
Siam wants an average eight acres for each of the nine identified centres among Santragachi, Siliguri, Ranchi, Guwahati, Patna, Hosur, Ernakulum, Vijayawada, Delhi cantonment, Palakkad, Kharagpur, Challapalli and Kalamassery.

Pune-based Bajaj Auto and the Renault-Nissan alliance today signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to produce the ultra-low-cost car (ULC), which is likely to hit the market by 2012 in India and overseas.
The MoU follows the decision taken by the three companies of not forming a joint venture company for the project as was planned in 2008. Bajaj Auto had entered into a tripartite agreement with Renault and Nissan to make the small car with a price tag of $3,000.
“The signing of the MoU follows discussions between both partners to define the product, manufacturing plan and distribution agreements,” said the release from Renault-Nissan.
DETROIT (Reuters) - General Motors Co GM.UL said on Wednesday it will sell its Nexteer Automotive unit to a China government-backed group, as GM focuses on its core car business while the Chinese look to bolster their global competitiveness.
GM said it reached a definite agreement to sell the maker of steering systems to Pacific Century Motors, a joint venture between Chinese auto parts supplier Tempo Group and the financing and investing arm of the Beijing municipal government.
Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed but some media reports have put the value at around $450 million.
