PUNE: Colourful roofs, cushy seats, blaring music, latest shiny steel fittings and much more, the 30-odd auto rickshaws that participated in the Auto Fashion Show organised by Rickshaw Parishad on Saturday, have attitude and a good enough reason to deck up in their finest and fittest. The idea is to draw attention to upliftment of auto drivers as respected professionals and giving their families basic medical and educational privileges, said Rashid Khan, founder-president of Rickshaw Parishad.
Formed on August 1, the Rickshaw Parishad comprises 200 members who work as rickshaw drivers in different parts of the city. And the rickshaw fashion show had participants from Pune, Kolhapur, Lonavla and Thane. "We hope to make this fashion show an annual feature in order to further motivate our rickshaw driver brethren. In the next month or two we will be sending a letter to the state and central governments to include rickshaw drivers in the OBC category as these professionals toil like labourers -- earning barely Rs 200 on an average per day-- and deserve a better standard of living," said Khan.

Deepak Chowgule's rickshaw dons a custom-made look. Sporting sleek pink plastic interiors, a pay-phone and a small fire extinguisher, the auto also has with compartment for toiletries and other provisions. "I spent over a lakh rupees to modify my rickshaw," said Chowgule from Gandhinglaj, Kolhapur.MANGALORE: The Federation of Karnataka Autorickshaw Drivers' Union, affiliated to CITU, will step up efforts to bring pressure on the district administration to accede to its demand for a hike in autorickshaw fares. The autorickshaw union has urged the deputy commissioner, who is also the chairman of regional transport authority to hike the minimum fare for the first 1.5-km to Rs 16 and Rs 11 for every km thereafter.
B V Raghavendra, state general secretary of the union told reporters here on Saturday that there are more than 10,000 autorickshaws operating across Dakshina Kannada and the autorickshaw drivers have to earn their livelihood from them. The drivers, like all others are bogged down by the spiralling prices of essential commodities and hike in various operational costs has only added to their economic burden, he noted.
L T Suvarna, district general secretary of the union said the autorickshaw drivers would stage a dharna in front of the office of the deputy commissioner here on August 12 from 10 am to 1 pm to press for their demands. "We have also demanded that the RTA increase the waiting and luggage charges by 15 per cent on existing rates," he said adding that the authority should also consider fulfilling various other local demands as well.

MUMBAI: In a move that has drawn applause from transport experts and commuters, the state transport department has decided to organise share-an-auto services to and from railway stations in the suburbs. The move is expected to reduce traffic congestion as well as bring relief to commuters who must increasingly contend with auto drivers who refuse to ply and choose passengers according to the destination.
The first route will be inaugurated by transport commissioner Dilip Jadhav in a few days at Bandra (East) and will see autos taking passengers between the station and the collector's office at Rs 5.50 per person. The metered fare for the distance is around Rs 12. Up to 50 auto shuttle stands are expected to be set up in phases across the suburbs within two months.
Meanwhile, BEST is planning to study the impact share-autos will have on its services, and could withdraw buses on non-profit-making routes. BEST general manager OP Gupta said, "Let me first clarify that the BEST does not directly compete with autos." But he added that the BEST's planning department would conduct a survey.
