Don't Forget Single Skin Oil Tanks, Says TankDepot.co.uk - OilFiredUp

Whilst Bunded Tanks now represent the majority of oil tank sales in the UK, there remain oil heating installations where it remains perfectly legal to install a Single Skin Oil Tank, as TankDepot.co.uk's Steve Beech explains.

Whilst Bunded Tanks now represent the majority of oil tank sales in the UK, there remain oil heating installations where it remains perfectly legal to install a Single Skin Oil Tank, as TankDepot.co.uk's Steve Beech explains. "A Bunded Oil Tank consists of a 'tank within a tank'. In the event of a spill from the inner tank, fuel will be contained within the outer tank. By contrast, Single Skin Oil Tanks incorporate no secondary containment features whatsoever. In the event of a spill from a Single Skin Oil Tank, uncontained fuel will be discharged to the environment. It's no surprise therefore, that Bunded Oil Tanks are a legal requirement at most new and replacement oil storage installations today." says Steve.

"However, Single Skin Oil Tanks do remain acceptable at a small number of low risk, domestic oil heating installations, where there is currently no legal requirement to install a Bunded Oil Tank. Such installations may represent only a small minority of oil storage installations, but installing a Single Skin Oil Tank at such installations can yield considerable cost savings for oil heating technicians and consumers alike.

The tank will not be positioned in such a manner whereby the vent point is not visible from the fill point e.g. installations incorporating an offset or remote fill.

75-foot vessel sinks in Puget Sound off Seattle - The Associated Press

SEATTLE (AP) The Coast Guard said Friday evening that a "very small part" of a diesel fuel and oil spill from a 73-foot workboat that sank earlier in the day has reached a Seattle beach.

Two miles of affected shoreline were surveyed, and cleaning crews have identified pockets of oil and worked to clean them as darkness fell, Capt. Scott Ferguson said.

Divers also worked to plug the source of the leak, Ferguson said. The vessel reportedly has 300 gallons of diesel and 30 gallons of motor oil on board in sealed tanks. It wasn't clear how much had leaked, creating a sheen of diesel oil the size of two football fields. The sheen remaining on the surface was expected to dissipate, the Coast Guard said.

The vessel is an old World War II landing craft that was being used as a workboat with a barge at a bulkhead project in Puget Sound near the city's West Seattle neighborhood, said Diede Janel, office manager of Waterfront Construction Inc. of Seattle.

Conservationists hope fines against shipping companies for causing Queensland's worst oil spill deter others from taking short cuts on maintenance. In 2009, dozens of freight containers fell off the Pacific Adventurer in heavy seas, breaking its hull and fuel tanks, and spreading 270 tonnes of oil over 56 kilometres from Brisbane to the Sunshine Coast.

BRENDAN TREMBATH: Conservationists hope fines for the shipping companies responsible for Queensland's worst oil spill will deter others from taking shortcuts on maintenance.

In 2009 dozens of containers fell off the Pacific Adventurer as it sailed in heavy seas. The ship's fuel tanks were damaged and 270 tonnes of oil spread over 56 kilometres from Brisbane to the Sunshine Coast.

ANNIE GUEST: The images of long stretches of Queensland beach blackened by oil haven't been good PR for the 129-year-old Swire shipping company and its subsidiary Swire Navigation.

Salvage of stricken ship off NZ resumes - Reuters

A policeman stands near debris and containers from the stricken container ship Rena, washed ashore at Mount Maunganui Beach October 13, 2011.

WELLINGTON (Reuters) - Oil tanks on a stricken container ship threatening to break in half off the New Zealand coast have survived a pounding by heavy seas, salvage experts said Thursday as the ship's owners apologized for the large clumps of oil washed up on beaches.

A second ship's officer appeared in court in connection with the running aground of the Liberian-flagged Rena 12 nautical miles off Tauranga on the east coast of New Zealand's North Island.

Large splits have opened up down the middle of the hull of the 236-meter (775-foot) vessel, which has been stuck for eight days on the reef and has lost up to 300 tonnes of heavy, thick, toxic fuel.

WELLINGTON, Oct 13 (Reuters) - Oil tanks on a stricken container ship threatening to break in half off the New Zealand coast have survived a pounding by heavy seas, salvage experts said on Thursday as the ship's owners apologised for the large clumps of oil washed up on beaches.

A salvage team was winched back on board the 47,230-tonne Rena and after an inspection reported the ship's rear tanks, holding around 1,000 tonnes of fuel, were intact. The ship was carrying 1,700 tonnes of fuel.
