IFT CEO Jon Burst: Add to gas tank, subtract from environment (and budget) - SmartPlanet.com (blog)

DiesoLift10 — offers railroad companies, fleet managers and utilities a 3 to 7 percent boost in fuel economy that translates to fewer greenhouse gas emissions and a smaller fuel bill.

Stagecoach Group — to provide it with the additive, which it claims saved it some 92,000 gallons of diesel fuel over the course of a year.

I spoke with Burst from his office in sweltering St. Louis, Mo. about how adding something extra to the gas tank can reduce what comes out of the tailpipe (and the corporate fuel budget).

JB: It is interesting when you talk about additives because, let’s face it, most additives are made of fuel. You can’t add a lot — you’re putting fuel in fuel.

Mercedes-Benz Vito E-Cell - NetCarShow.com

With the first battery-electric van to be introduced ex factory by any automobile manufacturer, Mercedes-Benz is opening a new chapter in drive technology for light commercial vehicles. Thanks to its emission-free drive system, the Mercedes-Benz Vito E-Cell is ideally suitable for inner-city operations and for particularly environmentally sensitive areas. The Mercedes-Benz Vito E-Cell operates with no emissions and almost silently, and imposes no restrictions on the operator in terms of load capacity and payload. Production of a small series of 100 Vito E-Cell vans has already commenced in 2010, and a further 2000 units are planned from 2011.

Deliveries to inner-city areas and pedestrian precincts, operations in areas with rigorous access restrictions, in-company transport in production shops, delivery access via underground car parks - the quiet, emission-free Mercedes-Benz Vito E-Cell with its purely battery-electric drive system is the perfect answer to the question of delivery operations in environmentally sensitive areas. Moreover, the Vito E-Cell is not only able to carry out its transport assignments in areas with high exhaust pollution, but also where there are noise restrictions protecting e.g. health resorts or in residential areas with night-time driving bans.

In response to the growing environmental burden in the densely populated areas of Europe and other regions of the world, the relevant authorities are increasingly introducing vehicle access restrictions in the form of environmental zones based on emissions or with time constraints. Emission-free vehicles with electric drive are usually exempted. Accordingly the Mercedes-Benz Vito E-Cell is eminently suitable for environmentally sensitive areas, both in commercial and public service operations, and in many areas of the service sector including e.g. parcel and postal deliveries, maintenance work and for other service providers.

There are also numerous incentive schemes for the purchase of emission-free vehicles. These are available in many countries and take widely different forms, ranging from direct purchasing subsidies to significant reductions in toll charges or vehicle taxes and exemption from access restrictions.

Armored vehicle designers turn their sights on vetronics for the next ... - Military & Aerospace Electronics

Termination last year of the Future Combat Systems (FCS) manned ground vehicles program by the U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) was met with tremendous concern, followed closely by considerable resolve. A determined military and aerospace industry partnered with DOD officials to ensure billions of non-recurring engineering (NRE) dollars would not be wasted, and that vehicle electronics , or vetronics , innovations resulting from FCS would be delivered in the hands of awaiting warfighters in the field.

The GCV is to be a first-of-its-kind -- a versatile, nine-man squad infantry carrier that protects against improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and other threats, moves in urban and off-road terrain, and accommodates emerging technologies, such as new electronics, as they become available. The Army’s goal is to build competitive prototypes by 2015 and production vehicles by 2017.

Chiarelli describes the GCV as “one of the most versatile vehicles that the Army has ever designed.” The vehicle is being development in an incremental fashion such that it can quickly incorporate technological change and enhance the Army's ability to keep pace with changes anticipated on the battlefields of today and tomorrow.

Aitech Defense Systems Inc. in Chatsworth, Calif. “In other words, instead of each individual subsystem being a little Picasso unto itself, the idea is to have some commonality across the processing platform so that you can use systems and subsystems again and again and over and over, without having to reinvent the wheel for each application.

Clarity of purpose - Honda's hydrogen hero - The Manly Daily

HONDA has been engaged in developing hydrogen fuel cell powered cars for more than 20 years starting out in 1988 with a people mover that had room inside only for the driver. The rest was taken up with a fuel cell, essentially a reactor box with a catalyst that consumes hydrogen to make electricity that in turn, drives the vehicle throuogh an electric motor.

The long haul development phase came to fruition with Honda’s FCX Clarity, a strikingly styled, big fastback with room inside for five and a reasonable boot.

Honda shrunk the size of its fuel cell components to something like a medium size suitcase that fits vertically under Clarity’s centre console to take better advantage of gravity flows.

From this small box comes a sufficient stream of electricity to propel Clarity like a 3.0-litre petrol V6 and gives it a range of up to 500 emissions free kilometres.
