For the third time in 10 days, Gaddafi troops in the town fought a tough, well-organised rearguard action, driving back a concerted rebel assault, and sending first casualties and then the rebel brigades back towards Tripoli .
They said the bodyguard, who was taken to a makeshift prison at a rear checkpoint north of the town, was the best evidence yet that Saif al-Islam, long touted as his father's heir, has been marshalling the town's defences.
He had yet to be interrogated but, according to Sadiq Daaeki, a supervisor at the prison, Saif al-Islam had been in the town until yesterday morning, staying at the house of a civil leader.
One story among rebels surging on Bani Walid during the afternoon was that Saif al-Islam had left early in a convoy of 30 SUVs across the desert, after a diversionary attack on a checkpoint.

Although the season may only be two games old, it won’t stop this Friday night’s first basketball derby of the season being as intense as if it were a national final, writes Eoin Weldon Both teams go into the game in impressive form.
The fresh presence of the Jeep brand on the Irish market is becoming more obvious following the takeover of the brand in Europe by Fiat. Fiat now owns almost 60 per cent of Jeep’s parent company Chrysler and aims to make inroads in the off-road market starting with the new entry level Compass model, which Michael Moroney reports on this week, following his recent test drive.
Taking the Jeep Compass for a test-drive the week of the National Ploughing Championships seemed like the ultimate test for this vehicle. However, unlike typical years, the weather this year was kind, with little rainfall, which meant that, even though I was prepared, I didn't get to push the Jeep Compass to the limit.
Jeep has a new 4x4 entry level Compass model on the market powered by a 2.2 litre turbo-diesel engine that's a shade noisy. The entry price is €30,000 and the overall package is based around a solid SUV design that's built on the Jeep heritage.
The test car was a 4x4 version of the Compass that means that it was a two wheel drive model. My experiences of two frosty and snowy winters have told me that 4x4s have their place and they prove their value when the snow piles down and the frost sets hard on the ground. To me, that's what cars like the Jeep Compass drivers need to be prepared for.
This Compass comes with a 2.2 litre turbo diesel engine that feels trucky and so I expected it to deliver the full 4x4 ability. The engine is 136bhp, which is lower in power and torque than the Toyota RAV4 and Land Rover Freelander competition.
In such a large, diverse country as America, long-distance road trips feel like a birthright. But going the distance coast-to-coast isn’t for just any jalopy. It requires a good, safe, reliable car that excels in comfort and other factors. In anticipation of the long weekend, the Consumer Reports’ Cars team has been debating which model is the best road trip car, and below we present our picks.
Because this topic elicited so many responses from our staff, we will present the picks in two parts. (See “ Best road-trip car, part 1 .”) We hope that you’ll share your picks, tips, and stories in the comments below.
My wife and I enjoy the stops along the way as much as the journey. We’ve (literally) been down this road before, towing a T@B teardrop trailer cross-country with our first Honda Odyssey . We learned from that trip that a bigger trailer would be nice - let’s say a 23-foot Airstream International Serenity. So what to tow it with? I’d go with a new Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited. Too bad there isn’t a turbodiesel version
yet.
The other day we were talking about this and I suggested that the Toyota Avalon would be nice pick. Funny thing is, several staffers agreed. The Avalon is very quiet, relaxing, and relatively economical, plus it has a large back seat and trunk. This all make it a good cross-country choice. But I would probably fall asleep before I got too far.
