Case Study - Water War Won! - Construction Week Online India
‘Sluggishly flows Mother Krishna, unaware of the predicaments on its banks’ – that’s the rough translation of the first line of a well known song from a Marathi movie released in 1967. The songwriter – who described the River Krishna – would not have thought that his words would have an uncanny relevance in the 21st century.

The Krishna River which originates in the Western Ghats at a height of nearly 1337 m, drains into the Bay of Bengal after flowing for about 1400 km across three states.

Along with several tributaries, it forms a key source of water in these three states – Maharashtra, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh.

There is a standing history of riparian disputes in the Krishna Basin amongst these states – with Maharashtra on one side while the southern states Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh on the other. “The Southern states are quite sensitive to the water issue particularly due to the construction of three hydroelectric plants that have turned the river westward instead of its natural eastward flow,” says Dr SV Dahasahasra, Member Secretary and Chief Engineer, Maharashtra Jeevan Pradhikaran (MJP). (The MJP has been responsible for creating water and sanitation infrastructure throughout the state of Maharashtra having executed 359 projects for 247 urban local bodies).

Barcelona Test, Day 1 - GrandPrix
The final test before the start of the 2010 Formula One World Championship began today at the Circuit de Catalunya, in Barcelona, Spain, today. In a change from all the rain which plagued the test last week in Jerez, the eleven teams taking part had dry comfortable conditions on the first day, with Mark Webber setting the fastest time of the day - nearly a second quicker than his rivals.

The Australian went for some shorter runs in his Red Bull and tried all three Bridgestone tyre compounds available, but did not have a trouble-free day, as he suffered a gearbox problem.

Mark Webber said, "We had a pretty good day of testing. We did some simulations and performance items in the morning and a race simulation in the afternoon. We had a precautionary stop in the middle of the race simulation because of a gearbox oil alarm, but the guys got the car turned around pretty quickly and we finished the session, so it wasn't too bad." Head of Race Engineering, Ian Morgan, said, "Today was always planned as a race weekend simulation day, so we did some testing along with P3 and qualifying in the morning and a race simulation in the afternoon. Everything went very well up until halfway through the race simulation, when something in the data made us decide to stop the car on track. It was nothing major though and we got the car repaired and back out until the end of the session. It went well today, apart from that small reliability issue." Sebastian Vettel will take over the Red Bull for the next two days.

During the day, Nico Hulkenberg was second quickest while Williams, Renault, Force India and Red Bull all put their drivers through a lot of pit stop practice, preparing for the upcoming races where, without refuelling this season, fast tyre changes will become essential.

Kobayashi quickest on Day 2 (with pictures) - pitpass.com
Kamui Kobayashi popped in a controversial 1:19.950 to go quickest in the final moments of testing at Jerez de la Frontera today.

Nico Hulkenberg . Conditions were much improved and while the track was still damp this morning following overnight rain this soon dried out thanks to the strong winds and the sun making a number of regular appearances.

Kobayashi was one of five drivers to complete over 100 laps, the Japanese driver enjoying a busy and productive day. His best time was posted right at the end of the day on a low fuel load, having spent much of the session running a much heavier car.

However, one particular team was outraged, claiming that the Sauber driver's time was posted after the session had ended and the lights were red. After thirty minutes of deliberating it was ruled that the time would stand because even though the session had effectively ended the lights at the end of the pitlane were not red at the time.
