Oil pumping delayed, Rena stern 'precarious' - TVNZ

The stranded ship Rena remains unstable and salvage crews held off pumping more than 1300 tonnes of heavy fuel oil off the vessel last night.

Earlier in the day Maritime New Zealand said preparations for fuel recovery had been ongoing on the vessel, which grounded on Astrolabe Reef off Tauranga 10 days ago, and fuel pumping was expected to begin at the end of the day.

However, Maritime NZ salvage expert Bruce Anderson yesterday afternoon said the necessary equipment had not been able to be installed in time, and it was too dangerous to start pumping oil last night.

Anderson said the ship has been found to be unstable. Though the bow of the ship is placed firmly on the reef, the stern is hanging in space.

TAURANGA — A salvage crew back on the grounded Rena aims to remove the bulk of the fuel oil off the container ship over the next few days.

The crew, operating from the platforms near the edge of the deck and using an Archimedes screw pump, will first work on the rear portside tank and hope to move 770 tonnes — the bulk of the heavy fuel oil still on the ship — to the waiting barge Awanuia.

The vessel’s power was off and the fuel was no longer hot — it was a cold density like Marmite, and it had to be sucked from the tank into hoses attached to the Awanuia.

Salvage teams renew efforts to get hundreds of tons of heavy fuel oil off stricken cargo ship Rena that is stuck precariously on a New Zealand reef, with the goal of keeping the country's worst maritime disaster from degenerating even more.

The calmest weather in days has given salvage crews hope they will be able on Friday to resume pumping the remaining fuel from a cargo ship stuck on a New Zealand reef.

The ship Rena has already spilled hundreds of tons of oil and crews are in a race against nature to try and remove the remaining fuel before waves break up the vessel, which has begun to crack apart and is leaning on a 22-degree tilt.

Liberian-flagged Rena has been stuck for nine days on a reef 14 miles off the east coast of New Zealand's North Island, spilling about 300 tons of heavy toxic fuel and some of its hundreds of containers into the sea.

Salvage operations will continue at the stricken ship Rena today, but it is unlikely that oil will start being pumped off the vessel today, says Maritime New Zealand salavage manager Bruce Anderson.

Today, heavy equipment like pumps and portable power supplies will be brought out onto the platforms and the hull may be penetrated later this afternoon.

Salvage crews had planned their operation today while on dry land. “It’s complexity on top of complexity,” says Mr Anderson.

The Rena, which grounded on the Astrolabe reef nine days ago, is listing at about 20 degrees and has been spilling fuel oil and containers into the sea.
