Libyan government bans unlicensed satellite phones - Forbes

Libya's news agency, JANA, reported Friday that those carrying a satellite phone without a permit could be sentenced to death as punishment for treason.

Many Libyans have been using satellite phones to communicate with one another after the government cut off mobile phone communications when the civil war started in February.

BENGHAZI, Libya (AP) - Libyan rebels battling Moammar Gadhafi's troops along the country's Mediterranean coast said they captured a key oil terminal Thursday that has repeatedly changed hands in the 6-month-old civil war.

Rebel spokesman Mohammed al-Rijali said he was with the fighters in Brega when they gained control of the strategic port city, 125 miles (200 kilometers) southwest of the de-facto rebel capital of Benghazi, after three weeks of intense fighting.

Oceans of opportunity - Irish Times

IRELAND’S “perfect storm” may be a popular catchphrase for the state of the economy. For the movers and shakers creating a new national marine research campus, however, it is a metaphor for opportunity.

Commodore Mark Mellett of the Naval Service and Dr Valerie Cummins, director of the new Marine and Energy Research Campus and Commercial Cluster (Merc3), do not immediately equate high winds with havoc, or geographical peripherality with isolation. Both see many advantages to a coastal border with some the world’s roughest seas, generating a premium wave resource and a third of Europe’s wind.

Both see many advantages to a coastal border with some the world’s roughest seas, generating a premium wave resource and a third of Europe’s wind. “It’s generally believed that the south Atlantic is the toughest ocean, but we often have far worse conditions within our area of jurisdiction,” says Mellett, who was recently promoted to flag officer or head of the Naval Service. “That presents many opportunities if you think about it – not just in harnessing renewable energy, but in providing a platform for ship design and technology of the future.” “Ireland has the third-largest sea area, and the largest maritime area to land mass, in the EU – and we derive only 1 per cent of gross domestic product from the maritime economy,” says Cummins, formerly head of UCC’s Coastal Marine Research Centre.

A recent SEAI study forecast 52,000 jobs in marine renewables by 2030, if the right supports are put in place. Cummins firmly believes much more can be made of the human capital already engaged. UCC’s ocean energy expert, Dr Tony Lewis, is “one of our best natural assets”, she says, given his international credibility.

WaPo Gets its Pinocchio on for Dishonest 'Warming' Attack on Perry - Big Government

WaPo reveals its delirium on the issue by citing polls as its apparent evidence for man-made climate change, concluding with “After all, it was first established in 1896 that carbon dioxide in the atmosphere could help create a ‘greenhouse effect.’” Apple, meet orange.

WaPo’s relative scale, this scolding of another for supposed ignorance, clueless about that of which it scolds, merits at least five Pinocchios.

WaPo , using a week’s worth of sneer quotes if still citing ‘no convincing evidence’ of catastrophic heating, just polls of other people not addressing ‘catastrophic climate change’, didn’t like that.

WaPo generally cites, in its coverage, as supporting its faith, ’something called’ the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. Now, the IPCC ‘is a bit old’, having been started expressly to ’support a possible future climate treaty’ in 1988. And seek to support such a thing, it does. If with increasing hilarity .

Libyan rebels claim victory in key oil terminal - Atlanta Journal Constitution

BENGHAZI, Libya — Libyan rebels battling Moammar Gadhafi's troops along the country's Mediterranean coast have claimed they captured part of a strategic port city that has repeatedly changed hands in the 6-month-old civil war.

Brega is a wide strip of desert made up of two residential units about 6 miles (10 kilometers) apart, followed by the oil refineries near the port on the Mediterranean Sea.

Brega is a wide strip of desert made up of two residential units about 6 miles (10 kilometers) apart, followed by the oil refineries near the port on the Mediterranean Sea. "We have taken the first residential unit and we are fighting in the second one now," al-Zwawi told The Associated Press on Friday.

Brega, about 125 miles (200 kilometers) southwest of the de-facto rebel capital of Benghazi, fell under rebel control briefly in March, but was recaptured by Gadhafi's forces shortly afterward. The fighting around the city has gone back and forth since then, with the rebels not managing to keep their ground.
