Auto Diesel Tanks
While traveling in India in 2005-2006, I noticed that a majority of the vehicles that we rode in – Auto rickshaws and classic-looking taxis – ran on Compressed Natural Gas ( CNG ). This was my first exposure to vehicles that did not use standard gas or diesel fuel, and was intrigued by the system and process. The vehicles had a compressed tank in the back trunk, and I had the opportunity to see one being filled while we were in a taxi at one of the smallest gas stations I had ever seen in New Delhi. Mumbai had very distinctive taxis that also run on CNG .
According to a recent Anchorage Daily News article , Alaska is considering changing their fleet to CNG vehicles to help reduce rising energy costs for the Department of Transportation and Public Facilities.
Specialized engines or conversions are required to allow a vehicle to be powered by CNG , which is highly pressurized methane in hard-sided tanks, though some engines are able to switch between regular gas and CNG .
Some of the advantages of switching to CNG are lower fuel prices, fewer greenhouse gas emissions, and a lower risk of combustion after an accident methane has a higher combustion temperature. According to the California Air Resources Board , CNG produced from landfill biogas has the lowest greenhouse gas emissions of any fuel analyzed. The article does not specify where the CNG from Alaska would come from, however, they do mention potential sources on the North Slope.

Andria Merritt, a hydrogeologist with DENR, said the action is taking place with the authority of a state contract to address the abandoned underground storage tanks. She said the tanks were installed in 1975, a few years before the state tightened underground storage tank rules.
The property is owned by Les Hinshaw, who now leases the site to Liberty Tire & Auto. Hinshaw built a trucking company there and later ran H&M Tire Service.
Merritt said there are six tanks on-site: a waste well tank, two diesel tanks and three gasoline tanks. On Monday, crews dug up the waste well tank and uncovered the two diesel tanks to pump out contents before removal.
Once the tanks are removed, samples of the underlying soil will be sent to a lab for testing. Merritt said from the looks of the soil around the diesel tanks, there appeared to be little contamination. However, results are inconclusive until soil testing is completed.

ORANGE COUNTY- A service station owner near Vidor is under pressure again and accused of selling bad diesel to customers. A month ago, KFDM told you about an ongoing state investigation into complaints about J.R. Conoco near Vidor. Drivers claim diesel from the station ruined their auto engines and state regulators say fuel was pumped into ditches around the station.
Fred Norman's truck sits at Weaver Motors in Kirbyville because it stopped working on August 15th. "He should have been shut down" says Norman.
Norman says he wasn't aware of the ongoing investigations into J.R. Conoco off farm road 105 when he filled up there. "I was pumping diesel and the truck just died. I immediately shut the pump off. Went to crank my truck and the water light came up on the dash." Norman says mostly water came out of his tank.
Norman says it caused about $6,000 in damage to his truck. "The owner Mr. Muhammad Sultan came out and we went through the whole situation again and he assured me he was going to take care of it" explains Norman.
