The US petroleum wholesale distribution industry includes about 5,700 companies with annual revenue of about $750 billion. Revenue can vary significantly from year to year with the price of crude oil. Major companies include Global Partners, Mansfield Oil, SemGroup, Statoil Marketing & Trading, and World Fuel Services. The industry is concentrated: the 50 largest companies generate more than 70 percent of revenue.
Demand for petroleum comes mainly from auto and truck use and home heating. Profitability is determined by the efficiency of operations. Most companies are local and operate a single "bulk station" (tank farm), although the large companies may operate a dozen facilities and serve several states. Large wholesale purchasers generally can negotiate bigger price discounts from suppliers and spread the cost of bulk holding facilities over a larger number of gallons. The industry is capital-intensive: average annual revenue per employee is over $7 million.
An economic recession or dramatic price fluctuations, such as those that occurred in the first half of 2008, reduce demand for gasoline. Concerns about US dependency on foreign fuel and environmental issues also impact demand. Any decline in demand can adversely affect petroleum distributors.
A diesel fuel spill behind the Southeastern Area Transit District facility on Route 12 could take weeks to clean up, state officials said Friday.
A diesel fuel spill behind the Southeastern Area Transit District facility on Route 12 could take weeks to clean up, state officials said Friday. “It’s going to take a while for the oil to migrate. We’ll be maintaining the absorbents and booms throughout the brook for at least a few weeks,” said Brian Emanuelson, emergency coordinator for the state Department of Environmental Protection.
Officials are blaming the spill — which sent an estimated 1,000 gallons of diesel fuel into an adjacent brook over the past two weeks — on a faulty distribution line that carries fuel from a 10,000-gallon holding tank to the buses at the facility.
SEAT General Manager Ella Bowman said the odor was not noticeable from the district’s building because the gas flowed down a hill and never carried upwind.

Wisconsin is acquiring a total of 24 plug-in hybrid school buses. Oconomowoc Transport Company is unveiling the first 11 busses just in time for the first week of school. Robelia says the new fuel efficient busses are lower maintenance and they reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 30 to 40 percent. She says the vehicles can go twice as far on a tank of fuel compared to a standard school bus, saving a lot of money. “They predict around a 7,500 gallon savings annually.” At almost $3.00 a gallon for diesel, that’s $22,500 a year saved.
The purchase of the hybrid electric busses and the solar recharging stations was funded in part by 3.6 million dollars from the Wisconsin Clean Transportation Program (WCTP), via the federal Recovery Act.
NOTE: Oconomowoc Transport Company is scheduled to unveil their eleven buses and solar recharging station at a ribbon-cutting ceremony today (Wednesday). Plus, showing momentum in the plug-in hybrid field, Riteway Bus Service has a ground-breaking ceremony in the afternoon, where a similar solar recharging station and fleet of 13 plug-in hybrid schools buses will call home in the near future.
